Hello, again!
I’ve mentioned before that I attended the Alpha SF/F/H Workshop. I owe a lot of my development as a writer to that community. Even long after attending, we’ve kept in touch and continue to support and critique each other’s work by email.
If you’re in Pennsylvania in late July you might consider attending the book signing hosted at the end of the workshop. The staff are really wonderful. I know I’d like to go!
The Alpha book signing will be on Wednesday, July 27 from 7 to 9 pm. Authors involved: David Barr Kirtley, Karina Sumner-Smith, Tamora Pierce, Seth Dickinson and Amal El-Mohtar and the 2016 Alpha students.
The Greensburg Barnes & Noble is at 5155 Route 30, Greensburg, PA 15601 (724-832-0622).
Did you ever get push back for having queer or queer-coded characters in your books, since their YA?
No, actually! I found Alpha to be really friendly and supportive to queer content. Some of the other workshoppers were also LGBT, and the staff were supportive. I guess explicit sex scenes would probably be out, given the age range of 14-18, but I was definitely able to write queer characters.
